An example of substantial negative unintended impacts on human wellbeing from agriculture is the excess damage caused by flooding due to the loss of protection from flooding due to forest removal.

If too much forest is removed it outweighs the benefits from agriculture. If important ecosystem services are not included markets or other institutions then people lack incentives to optimally manage their shared environment.

For an example see the recent paper:

Barbier et al 2008. Coastal Ecosystem-Based Management with Nonlinear Ecological Functions and Values. Science 319(5861) 321 - 323 (DOI: 10.1126/science.1150349)

A good overview is ecosystem services and poverty alleviation is:

Wich 'substancial impacts' do you refer to?.
As far as I know, the freer trade agriculture uses the enviroment with efectiveness, rather the trade taxes, goberment's control etc.

There are plenty of things that we can blame, but we have to find a way to try to end poverty
